Women considering breast augmentation should always find out as much about the procedure as they can. One of the most important questions to ask your plastic surgeon is – What are the different types of breast implants.
Breast augmentation is designed to increase the size and shape of the breast. The procedure may be done for cosmetic reasons only, or to reconstruct the breast after a mastectomy. Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed with the use of breast implants.
What are the different types of breast implants?
Breast implants used for breast augmentation are available in a variety of styles, shapes, and textures. However, saline and silicone breast implants are the most common options.
1. Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saline solution, but the outer shell is made of silicone. Saline breast implants are approved for use in women 18 years of age and older, and are filled at the time of surgery.
2. Silicone breast implants are filled will silicone gel, and also have an outer silicone shell. They are approved for use in women 22 years of age and older. Silicone breast implants are often preferred, because they feel more like natural breast tissue than saline implants.
- Form stable implants also referred to as ‘gummy bear implants,’ are silicone implants filled with silicone gel than has a thicker consistency than traditional silicone implants. This prevents leakage, so if a rupture occurs the implants will hold their shape.
