If you have saggy upper eyelid skin or bags below your eyes and don’t like the way your eyes look, blepharoplasty may be the answer for you. Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate your appearance and improve the contours of your eyes. But what exactly is blepharoplasty?
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that is done to rejuvenate the eyelids and revitalize the appearance of the eyes. An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids.
Facial skin loses elasticity over time, and the muscles that support the eyelids become weak. The loose skin often creates folds on the upper eyelids and deep creases beneath the lower eyelids. The weakening of the muscles causes the fat pads surrounding the eyes to protrude, giving the appearance of bags below the eyes. Blepharoplasty can address all these issues.
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty corrects droopy upper eyelids, a condition known as ptosis, by removing excess eyelid skin. The saggy eyelids sometimes hang so low over the eyes that they interfere with normal vision. An upper eyelid lift also corrects puffiness in the upper eyelids by removing surplus fat deposits.
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty is often performed under IV sedation with local anesthesia and takes 30-60 minutes to complete.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty removes or repositions excess fat below the eyes to improve the appearance of puffy lower eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery can also reduce fine wrinkles on the lower eyelids.
The incisions for lower eyelid blepharoplasty are typically made inside the lower eyelids, so there are no visible scars.
Recovery after blepharoplasty is relatively short, as most patients can return to work within 2-3 days.
