What Is A Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a skin rejuvenation treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to peel away the outer layer of dry, dead cells. This triggers cell renewal and increases the moisture content of the skin.
Chemical peels transform the skin by improving conditions such as wrinkles, scars, discoloration, and enlarged pores. There are different types of chemical peels – light or superficial, medium, and deep.
Are There Any Side-Effects With Chemical Peels?
Some side-effects should be expected after a chemical peel, but the type and severity vary depending on the strength of the peel.
Light peels often result in some redness, irritation, as well as a stinging sensation, but these side-effects typically subside within a few days. Light peels require about 1 week for healing.
Medium peels typically involve the use of TCA (trichloroacetic acid), so the side-effects are more intense than those associated with a light peel. The redness usually fades within 7-10 days, and there may also be mild swelling for a day or two. The skin will start to peel about 2-3 days after treatment. Medium peels take 10-14 days to heal.
Deep peels can only be performed once and are typically done with phenol. Deep peels can affect the heart so they should be avoided by people with heart disease. Deep peels can also cause liver and kidney damage.
Other side-effects of chemical peels include scarring, crusting, a change in skin color, infection, and cold sore reactivation.
