Does LASIK Require a Long Recovery?

Does LASIK Require a Long Recovery?

If you are tired of wearing glasses or contacts, LASIK surgery may be the solution for you. LASIK is a safe surgical procedure that has been done by millions of people struggling with vision issues. One of the questions people who decide to undergo the procedure often ask is – Does LASIK require a long recovery.

What exactly is LASIK?
LASIK is a vision correction procedure that is used to treat refractive errors in the eye- nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

LASIK is an outpatient procedure that takes less than a minute to perform. During the procedure the ophthalmologist creates a corneal flap, which is folded back so that a laser can be used to reshape the cornea. The flap is then put back in place and the eye heals naturally, without any need for stitches.

LASIK surgery is not painful, but at the start of the procedure patients are given anesthetic eye drops to ensure that they remain comfortable during the procedure.

Does LASIK Require a Long Recovery?
Recovery after LASIK surgery is minimal, as most patients are able to resume normal activities the day after surgery.Patients may notice some eye sensitivity and irritation after LASIK surgery, but this usually goes away within a day or two. Most patients experience some improvement in vision immediately after surgery, but it may take up to6-8 hours to settlein some cases (click here to learn more).

Since my child is now playing sports, how often do I need to schedule ophthalmology appointments?

It’s always great when kids spend time indulging in their favorite sport, but this often puts them at risk for injury, including eye injuries. When sports season comes around kids enjoy a range of interactive sports including basketball, football, and tennis, so it’s a good idea to have their eyes checked ahead of time to make sure they are seeing well. If your child is now playing sports, you also need to schedule annual ophthalmology appointments (read more).

Eye Exams for Children
The experts say that comprehensive eye care for kids should begin by about the age of 4, earlier, if there are any signs of eye problems.  From then on, eye examinations should be done annually, especially for kids who wear prescription glasses or contact lenses.  Regular ophthalmology appointments are important, because they make it possible to spot any vision problems early, so that they can be corrected.

If your child is now playing sports, you should make sure to schedule ophthalmology appointments at the start of the season, and also at the end. There are times when an eye injury may be overlooked because there are no obvious symptoms. So it’s important to check with your eye doctor at the end of the season, to ensure that your child’s vision is okay. Protective eyewear is also recommended.
