The cheek area is one of the first places to lose volume as we age, and many people turn to cheek augmentation to try and regain the loss of youthful fat.Fat grafting is often the preferred method to enhance the cheeks, because itproduces natural-looking results. One of the common questions doctors often get asked about the procedure is – Do cheek fat injections dissolve if I lose weight?
Fat grafting for cheeks
Fat grafting for cheeks is a procedure that involves the use of a patient’s own fat to restore volume to the cheeks. The fat is first harvested from a donor area that has unwanted fat, which is typically the abdomen or thighs. It is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the fatty portion, before being injected into the cheeks.
Do fat grafts dissolve if you lose weight?
When the fat is injected initially it does not have its own blood supply. However, the speed with which it develops influences the amount of fat that survives, but some of the fat will die while the blood vessels are developing.
Once the grafted fat gains its own blood supply, it will remain in the long term. The fat cells usually behave in a manner that is consistent with the site from which they were taken. The fat will not ‘dissolve’ if you lose weight, but there will be some volume loss if there is significant weight reduction.
Having said that it’s important to note that people who are considerably overweight or intend to lose a lot of weight, are not ideal candidates for fat grafting procedures.
