How Long is Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

If you are experiencing any anxiety about the recovery timeline in the days leading up to breast augmentation surgery, don’t hesitate to talk to your surgeon.    Talking with your surgeon about the length of the recovery and what to expect during the healing process will help put your mind at ease.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty is a procedure that generally uses breast implants to increase the size of the breasts.  Breast augmentation also improves the shape and volume of the breasts.

How Long is Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

Full recovery from breast augmentation generally takes 4-6 weeks, and most women need to take at least one week off work.   However, women with physically demanding jobs may require a longer recovery time.

The recovery timeline after breast augmentation can be influenced by factors such as implant placement, surgical technique, and the size and type of implants.

What To Expect During Recovery?

It’s normal to have some swelling and bruising after breast augmentation, and the swelling can take up to 6 weeks to resolve.  Patients will also feel sore for about 2-3 days.  Pain medication is prescribed to ease any discomfort during the first few days after surgery.   The pain usually subsides within seven days.

Tips For A Successful Recovery After Breast Augmentation

  • Arrange to have someone stay with you for the first few days after surgery, as you won’t be able to do normal daily activities.
  • Get plenty of rest and eat a healthy diet to help the body heal.
  • Sleep on your back for at least four weeks after surgery.  Sleeping in this position will help to maximize healing and reduce the risk of capsular contracture.
  • Wear a sports bra for support.

If you are considering breast augmentation but concerned about the recovery process, it’s best to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon about the recovery timeline.
